Which are the Differences between an Aesthetic Pedicure and a Therapeutic Pedicure?

We often talk about Pedicure, but equally often we do not know the difference between Aesthetic Pedicure and Curative Pedicure! We immediately start by specifying that both the Care Treatments carry out an effective Healthy Action for the Wellness and the Aesthetic Appearance of our Feet, but they comply with different needs..let’s see why!

Every day we talk, in our Nail Salons and here in our Nails Portal Pics Nails, about Pedicure…but it is good to specify which are the specific characteristics of an Aesthetic Pedicure and the Therapeutic one, to clarify any doubt and exactly understand which Treatments we refer to when we use these two terms!

We immediately start by specifying the purpose and the meaning of the Term Aesthetic Pedicure: when we use this Definition, we talk about all those focused Treatments that allow us to take Care of the Aesthetic Appearance of Nails, to alleviate the Stress and Muscular and Nervous Tensions after an intense day of work, to Give a new appearance to the skin, thanks to a Careful Footbath, to the use of the Hands and Feet Scrub for skin and an Hydrating Hands and Feet Mask... the whole accompanied by a sweet Relaxing Massage.

It is clear, therefore, that Aesthetic Pedicure - as indicated by the name itself – is in fact a Treatment of Aesthetic competence/that concerns Aesthetic, aimed at the care of the appearance of our Feet and our Nails...a relaxing moment when we can take care of our Feet with Specific and Professional Products!

Moreover, we must not forget that Feet play a fundamental role for the Wellbeing of all our body: therefore, exactly as we recommend for Hands, specific cares and periodical treatments are fundamental to prevent the problems of skin and nails!

What do we mean then when we talk about Therapeutic Pedicure?

With the Term Therapeutic Pedicure is indicated a Treatment indicated for people who suffer from more Complex Diseases related not to the purely aesthetic aspect but to the Skin and Nail status of health of Feet, as well as to many and widespread issues caused by postural deficiencies, of the flat-footedness, etc.

Precisely for this reason, when we talk about Curative Pedicure we mean a treatment of Medical Expertise, entrusted to a precise expert, the Podiatrist or, according to the problematic, also to the Dermatologist.

While in the past, indeed, these types of Treatments could also be carried out by experts of the Aesthetic Sector (beauticians, nail technicians, etc.), today the Curative Pedicures are Services that concern the Medical Sector.

Let’s see, below, some examples of Problem for which it is often necessary a Curative Pedicure!

Feet Skin Problems Callous and Hard Skins

Problems of the Epidermis: Callous and Hard Skins.

It often happens that Callous and Hard Skins appear on our Feet when the Epidermis reacts to trauma and frictions prolonged in time: our Skin, in fact, "protects" itself, producing rougher areas and real thickenings!

Callous and Hard Skins, in addition to the unaesthetic appearance of our Feet, cause painful sensations and tend to recreate themselves in time.

And if Callous do not generally cause extremely painful inflammations - if immediately treated – Hard Skins have a hard core surrounded by an inflamed and painful area.

That is why our advice is to promptly treat these issues, in order to avoid further deeper inflammations!

Feet Skin Problems Warts

Problems of the Epidermis: Warts.

Another problem which is rather widespread are Warts, that are small viral infections which affect our epidermis...and often the skin of the sole of Feet!

They are commonly recognisable for their rough, corrugated surface, and they may cause a feeling of inconvenience and pain due to the weight exerted on the foot from our body.

Obviously, in case of Warts, our advice is to immediately call a Dermatologist who will be able to properly judge the problem and recommend you the best solution!

Also in this case, however, we remind you how much a proper hygiene, the constant care and some small attentions (avoiding walking barefoot in public places such as pools or gymnasiums, for example, or still use socks and shoes that leave breathe adequately the foot, etc.) is important to avoid the occurrence of this issue!

Nails Thickened by Trauma

Nail Issues: Nail Thickened by Trauma.

We now proceed to the issues that affect the health of our Nails: here is, in the photo next to, a first example, that is the presence of a Nail which is extremely damaged by a Trauma that has led to the thickening of the Nail itself, to the hyperkeratosis!

Very strong Trauma or repeated in time (let’s think about using unsuitable shoes or to the sports which require a continuous pressing of the nail area such as football etc.) can cause a thickening of the Nail that can be lessened (often, if the Matrix has been damaged the problem cannot be completely resolved) with an aesthetic treatment!

In the case of a male foot - such as that of the photo for example - we recommend first to avoid further trauma for the nail and proceed with a careful smoothing of the nail surface to "lower" and reduce the thickening and potentially apply a Nail Strengthener for a few weeks.

Toe Nails Hyperkeratosis

In the case, instead, of a female foot it will be possible to proceed first with the "lowering" of the nail thickening with a Nail File (the most skilled can also use a Nail Drill).

At that point it will be possible to opt for a Gel Nails Extension, to ensure that the Nail reinforces and to obtain a pleasant aesthetically and visually finish, especially in cases where the Matrix of the Nail has been damaged!

In the case of damage or trauma of the Matrix of the Nail, in fact, the growth of the Nail Surface may be compromised and a Nails Extension will help to obtain a Nail characterised by the healthy and natural appearance!

As we have seen in this Quickview of examples and common issues for many men and women, often an Aesthetic Pedicure might not be sufficient or suitable to the resolution of problems that concern the Epidermis or the Toe Nails of our Feet; it will be necessary, in these cases, to consult a Doctor capable to conduct the most suitable Treatment or to potentially recommend a proper pharmacological care!

Our Council, once again, is to never overlook our Feet and take care of them throughout the year with constancy, to avoid and prevent the occurrence of problems like these and to arrive at the summer period with Healthy and Well-finished Feet!
